Zak Crawley Unaware of Captain Stokes' Controversial 'Weak Men' Remarks

The English opening batter Crawley suggested he was not familiar with comments made by skipper Ben Stokes about the dressing room as no place for "weak men".

Stokes made those words in several interviews in the wake of his team's loss in the second match of the Ashes series against Australia earlier this month.

Ahead of the third Test, where the visitors are staring at a series loss with a match to spare, the captain stated he had allowed his message to "drift around" among the playing group.

"I've done the necessary discussions over the past two days that I required," remarked the England leader.

But, following Crawley made 85 on the fourth day in the third Test, he stated: "I didn't see that."

"I didn't see and wasn't really looking out for it. Our approach is to take everything that is said in the media with some skepticism," Crawley continued.

Frank Discussions and Consistent Messaging

Stokes issued his "weak men" comment subsequent to his side suffered a loss in Brisbane to fall 2-0 down.

The team afterwards took a break to a Queensland resort between the second and the upcoming matches.

Prior to the Adelaide contest, he revealed his team had held "raw" talks and he had asked them to "show a bit of dog" in their effort to remain alive in the Ashes battle.

Yet, Crawley stated the messaging from the captain and head coach McCullum had remained in line with their prior three years in leadership.

"It's been very positive, unchanged," noted the opener. "It's just trying to be optimistic, playing our brand, with lots of freedom. It felt like we could do an extraordinary feat going into this Test."

The Hosts Close of Rapid Series Victory

The opener's wicket on day four came during a decisive three-wicket burst by Australia off-spinner Nathan Lyon.

Lyon's triple strike in 20 deliveries – including the wickets of Harry Brook and Ben Stokes – meant the chasing side six down for 207 in pursuit of a notional total of 435 runs.

This means, the home team need four wickets on Sunday's last day to move to an insurmountable three-nil advantage with three Tests.

A loss will extend England's winless run in this country to 18 consecutive matches and condemn them to a fourth successive overseas Ashes loss.

The current battle is set to be decided in only 11 days of cricket – with England fell the initial matches in two and four days each.

Not since 1921, when Australia completed a series win in England in eight days, has the destination of the urn been determined so quickly. The hosts have also won in 11 days on two other occasions in the 21st century.

"It's disappointing," said Crawley. "Our goal was to win the Ashes and we're facing elimination now."

"There will still be plenty to play for and we will certainly approach it with that mindset," Crawley added.

"The challenge has been difficult. They're a formidable team. It was inevitably tough touring here to face them. They entered as the favourites and they've proven why."

Ollie Pope's Position In Question

Although Crawley's innings in the third Test probably answers doubts about his short-term future in the side, Ollie Pope appears under threat for his spot in the fourth Test on Boxing Day.

The Surrey batsman fell for 17 in England's second knock on day four, extending his poor record against Australia.

In sixteen Ashes knocks, the Surrey man has never made a half-century and boasts an average of 17.62.

Only one other English batsman in over a century – Amiss – has played as many times in the top six in Ashes Tests and returned a lower average.

But, the opener said any suggestion Pope is being scrutinised originates with "you guys" – referring to the journalists – "not inside the camp."

"The squad is fully aware how good of a player he is," said he. "Ollie has enjoyed a productive year if I'm honest."

"He has played some really good knocks. It is noise externally. There is no discussion of that nature regarding Pope amongst the players," he finished.
