Federal authorities has entered the fray in a lawsuit brought forward by California Republicans, aiming to prevent the California's newly approved congressional redistricting map.
This court case, submitted to federal court, challenges the redistricting plan championed by the state's Democratic governor, which was created in response to a Republican-led gerrymander in Texas.
"California's electoral map constitutes a blatant attempt to seize control that violates civil rights and undermines the democratic process," stated the US attorney general.
The Democratic party have voiced assurance that the new maps will withstand legal scrutiny.
"The plaintiffs lost at the ballot box and they are likely to also lose in court," stated a representative for the governor.
Legal Basis
The legal challenge claims that California's map improperly used race as a factor to significantly advantage Hispanic voters in contravention of the US Constitution.
"It is unconstitutional to use race as a proxy to further partisan goals, but that is exactly what the California General Assembly did with Proposition 50," argued a high-ranking representative from the DOJ's civil rights unit.
Political Context
This courtroom confrontation constitutes the major counterpunch by Democrats in the continuing political battle that started with Texas and has spread across various parts of the country.
In contrast to elsewhere, where GOP-controlled legislatures have implemented partisan maps, California's plan required voter approval, which it received with nearly 65% of the vote.
Wider Consequences
The Democratic party need to gain just a small number of Republican-held House seats to gain majority of the House of Representatives in next year's congressional elections.
The party that holds the majority will shape the final years of the current administration, deciding if a unified Republican Congress will persist in implementing its agenda or face resistance, investigations and potential further challenges.
