In the lead-up to the launch of The Liz Truss Show, a particular refrain was repeated time and time again: “They tried to silence her.” Turns out they didn’t need to, because Truss demonstrated a clear aptitude of managing that task independently.
A Tardy Debut
The inaugural episode, she tweeted, was scheduled to drop on Friday at 6pm. Except, on Friday at 6pm, it was nowhere to be seen. After a brief delay and still nothing, her supporters began to grow itchy. “Where is the episode?” they tweeted. Additional minutes elapsed. “Seriously, Liz, pull it together,” sighed another. By twenty past six it began to appear that Truss's understanding of YouTube’s upload procedure mirrored her comprehension of Britain's fiscal management.
But then, against all odds, the series at last materialized. A full hour late. Presumably as the former PM still hasn’t worked out how to change her clocks back from British Summer Time.
A Barking Mad Opening Monologue
So, a rocky beginning. Yet what came next was perhaps the barking mad introductory rants for some time. “You’d have to be watching the fake news BBC to not know of the country's downward spiral,” was her opening, sitting in a seemingly cramped space furnished with the sort of books that pubs buy by the metre.
The thrust of the monologue remained evident: Britain is in desperate trouble. “Small businesses are dying. Large firms are exiting … Individuals are forced to remove their own teeth,” she declared. According to her, it's a crime-ridden, socialist, Islamist dystopia. If they made Yes Minister today, she suggested, Humphrey Appleby might be reimagined as “a radicalised trans activist”. To make matters worse, the British people don’t realise this as the media, with their “Gail’s bakeries and gated residences”, refuse to tell them the truth.
The Liz Truss Show stems from a desire for American adoration, despite the fact that the only thing that America knows concerning her involves the time she presented her book the wrong way up on a major U.S. network.
A Transatlantic Audience in Mind
At this point the true nature became apparent what The Liz Truss Show actually is. Shunned in the UK so completely that ITV Racing didn’t even recognise her, her hopes are now vested on gaining acceptance from U.S. conservative circles. The premiere's rant was nothing more than a comprehensive catalog of Maga stereotypes concerning Britain. The woman longs to serve as a vocal ally for the former U.S. president, if not that, then an iteration of the wartime broadcaster who seemed like a bucket of spanners had fallen on him.
Stilted Interviews
After the soliloquy, she began speaking with her guests. The first was an academic, described as “the top Substack writer in Britain”. We’ll have to assume he participated because, for a curiously extended period, the camera never left the host. During a segment, when the guest began speaking, the focus remained on the host for nearly a minute. It's hard to say if you’ve ever spent forty seconds watching her without sound, blinking and gulping, but it’s a genuinely disturbing sight. It is not an experience to be recommended.
Following a short discussion with another invitee – a podcaster in a ‘FREEDOM’ T-shirt – the show moved on to a past Brexit Party representative a certain politician, who, as expected ranted about the issue of immigration. The standout moment regarding this discussion concerned its abrupt finish, terminating suddenly just as she ventured onto a questionable path concerning how to "persuade" legal migrants to depart Britain. What might have occurred? Did she say something that was beyond the pale, or was it that notorious shadow government muzzling her anew? The truth may remain elusive.
A Pathetic Endeavor
To think this venture is sustained only by Liz Truss wants America to love her, notwithstanding that the only thing American viewers recall related to her is her televised blunder with a publication on Fox News once. Thus she is consigned to broadcasting from a cramped setting online, similar to the initial victim in a catastrophe movie. It’d be tragic if it were not so profoundly foolish.
The second episode of her program is scheduled for release Friday next at six p.m.. Which is, contingent on Liz Truss has figured out how clocks work before then.
