The Film 'Together' Is Now Streaming, and It Could Strengthen or Shatter Your Partnership.

We present a dare for long-term couples who are fans of horror films: Sit down with your partner and stream Together. The 2025 indie hit has now made its streaming debut on Hulu. Outwardly, it might appear like standard body horror, but beneath Together lies a deep examination about the ways we decide to love one another.

A Directorial Debut Exploring Relationship Dynamics

Together represents the introductory feature for director Michael Shanks. It features actors Alison Brie and Dave Franco as Tim and Millie, partners that have been together for ten years. Married in real life in 2017, Franco and Brie bring a particular energy to their characters, skillfully embodying both the joys and frustrations of a committed partnership.

The narrative commences when Millie and Tim relocate from the urban environment to the country for professional reasons. A familiar plot device, admittedly, but that’s mostly where the cliches cease. Together evolves into as much a deep dive into the psyche of the partnership as it is a film about physical terror.

A Supernatural Catalyst

While trekking near their country house, a storm hits, and the protagonists fall into an hole in the earth. After spending the night there and finally finding a way out, a strange force starts to affect the duo. This force induces a supernatural closeness between them that goes well past typical partnership.

The whole movie is a slow burn horror experience, weaving in moments of fever-dream horrors, unsettling (but tastefully done) biological grotesqueries, and authentically humorous interactions (sometimes in the middle of something disturbing). The director skillfully blends these components neatly and wraps them up in a slowly mounting atmosphere of fear.

Complex Characterizations

A significant portion of Together is only Brie and Franco, and they skillfully illustrate countless layers to the dynamic between Tim and Millie. Millie’s confidence and feeling of intimacy is suffering due to a distance. Her unspoken irritation of Tim for his reluctance to pursue anything but his floundering music career inexorably rises.

Conversely, Tim experiences isolation and cut off by Millie, who’s the cause they’ve relocated rural and far away from his network of friends. He is terrified of the idea of completely losing his personal autonomy in another person. This fear is amplified by the fact he lacks a driver's license and is dependent on Millie for getting around.

The director's cleverest decision in this movie avoids making Tim or Millie the definite antagonist.

Tim and Millie face the kind of problems that come with long-term unions after ten years. At their core, they have affection for each other. They still laugh together, offer support, and are vulnerable at times. But below this facade, there’s an unavoidable undercurrent of doubt about their relationship.

Symbolism and Metaphor

While the paranormal elements in Together symbolize these concerns of unhealthy attachment and giving oneself over to a partner, the allegory avoids being clumsy or self-important. Instead, these visceral horror elements offer a ideal counterpart to the interpersonal storytelling. Both the frights and the fights serve the other symbiotically.

A Controversial Conclusion

Together’s final act, which remains unspoiled, has left audiences divided on the story's concluding statement about unhealthy partnerships. Reports indicate that unattached audience members have interpreted the film as a powerful case for remaining unattached. Meanwhile, some couples who were in conflict found that the film actually helped them resolve their issues.

Regardless of your relationship status, your own interpretation could potentially serve as a telling indicator of how you view relationships. Will the ending plant a sense of discomfort and fear, or a uplifting feeling of optimism? Will you see yourself in either protagonist and yell at the screen, or simply glance toward your partner and utter, “We could get through that together”?

No matter your reaction, Together is an experiment you can embark on today.

Together is currently playing on the streaming service Hulu at present.
